TORONTO—The Beguiling,
Canada's premier comic book retailer, is honoured to welcome Lewis Trondheim,
the prolific French cartoonist and author, for his first visit to Toronto. Trondheim is one of the bestselling, most-awarded, and most beloved cartoonists in the
world, with well over 100 French albums to his credit and more than a dozen
works currently translated into English. Trondheim's interactive stage
presentation will combine narration, live drawing and a moderated Q&A with
fans old and new, on *Saturday September 25th at 7pm, at Innis Town Hall on The University of Toronto campus.*
"Trondheim's work is
remarkable and inspiring," says Peter Birkemoe, owner of Toronto's The
Beguiling. "An appearance like this by him in any city in Europe, or even Quebec, would be mobbed with fans… This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime events that our
customers kick themselves for missing, so I certainly hope they take the
opportunity to meet Mr. Trondheim and enjoy what I've heard is a fantastic
presentation!"
Lewis Trondheim got his
cartooning start in the mid 1980s, working in a contemporary fiction and
autobiography vein—but drawing all of his characters as anthropomorphic bears,
dogs, cats (or in the case of Trondheim himself, birds). His quirky and unique
take quickly won him acclaim both with fans and other cartoonists.
He co-founded the
groundbreaking French comics publishing house L'Association (publisher of /Persepolis/ by Marjane Satrapi and /Epileptic/ by David B.) while continuing to
work for some of the biggest publishers in the world, including Dargaud and
Delcourt. In 2006 Trondheim was awarded the most prestigious title in cartooning,
winning The Grand Prix de la Ville d'Angouleme, making him president of the Angouleme
Comics Festival in 2007.
"In English," Birkemoe
explains, "translation of Trondheim's work has spanned every genre, from his
autobiographical travel books /Little Nothings/ to the epic
fantasy-adventure series /Dungeon/, his kids titles /Kaput and Zosky,
Tiny Tyrant, /and /Aileen,/ and a terrific assortment of quirky and
unique individual titles. Trondheim is one of the few cartoonists working in
any language who is providing, literally, something for everyone."
An extensive collection of
Lewis Trondheim's comics in English and in French are currently available for
sale at The Beguiling (601 Markham Street) and will be available for sale at
the event.
