*******************************************************

HEY PRINCESS by Mats Jonsson
-- A 472-Page Graphic Novel
-- $14.95 (US), ISBN 978-1-60309-051-3
www.topshelfcomix.com/swedish-invasion

HEY PRINCESS is a story of moving to the big city, and being
young, insecure and desperate to be as hip as everyone else.
When the graphic novel was first published in Sweden, the book
received praise among both critics and readers for its incisive
and entertaining account of indie pop-listening young people
in the mid-1990s. HEY PRINCESS takes its place in the proud
tradition of self-deprecating, confessional, sex-obsessed and
guilt-ridden autobiographical comics, but stakes out a unique
identity by virtue of its Nordic setting and biting social
criticism.

*******************************************************

THE 120 DAYS OF SIMON by Simon Gardenfors
-- A 416-Page Graphic Novel
-- $14.95 (US), ISBN 978-1-60309-050-6
www.topshelfcomix.com/swedish-invasion

THE 120 DAYS OF SIMON began when Swedish cartoonist/rapper
Simon Gärdenfors left his home to spend four months on the
road. The rules were simple: During the 120 days he wasn't
allowed to return to his home, or to spend more than two
nights at the same place. Otherwise, anything could
happen...and it did. The result was an epic adventure across
Sweden as Simon slept on strangers' couches, visited an
ostrich farm, ate a psychedelic cactus, practiced free love,
received death threats, was beaten up by teenagers, got
adopted by a motorcycle gang, drank obscene amounts of alcohol,
and sacrificed his underpants to the Nordic god Brage.
And that's just for starters! ... When this graphic novel was
originally released in Sweden, it created a bit of a scandal.
One journalist wrote that she felt like beating Simon up,
while others called it a masterpiece.

*******************************************************

THE TROLL KING by Kolbeinn Karlsson
-- A 160-Page Full-Color Graphic Novel
-- $14.95 (US), ISBN 978-1-60309-061-2
www.topshelfcomix.com/swedish-invasion

A dwarf falls into a river and is taken to a place beyond
space and time. A carrot takes a bath and finds itself
transforming. Two reclusive mountain men rejoice when their
wish for children is granted, but their sons make a terrible
discovery. And throughout all these tales, the spirit of the
forest walks on… Welcome to the surreal world of THE TROLL
KING, by Swedish visionary Kolbeinn Karlsson. It's a fantastic
journey into the wilderness lurking right outside your town,
brought to you by comics' cuddliest Viking.

*******************************************************

FROM THE SHADOW OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS (VOL 2)
Edited by Johannes Klenell
-- A Full-Color 200-Page Anthology
-- $14.95 (US), ISBN 978-1-60309-064-3
www.topshelfcomix.com/swedish-invasion

The exploding evolution of the Swedish comics scene demands
a second volume of the NORTHERN LIGHTS anthology. Never before
has this much talent been brewing so close to the arctic
circle, and both the media and readers of the world are
starting to take notice. This volume gathers the work of
Marcus Ivarsson, Sofia Olsson, Sara Granér, Kobeinn Karlsson,
Anneli Furmark and many, many more; with a cover by Nanna
Johansson. Pick up this anthology and check out this
emerging and amazing Swedish comics scene. Co-published by
Galago and Top Shelf.

*******************************************************

SWEDISH COMICS HISTORY by Fredrik Strömberg
-- A 124-Page Full-Color History Book
-- $19.95 (US), ISBN 978-91-85161-77-5
www.topshelfcomix.com/swedish-invasion

Swedish comics are just now about to make it big abroad, but
they have a long and intricate history -- a history that goes
back to (at least) the end of the 18th Century. This book
chronicles the history of comics in Sweden, presenting major
trends and creators, showing everything from ancient picture
stories etched in stone by the Vikings to the vibrant and
diverse comics culture of the 21st century. The book is in
full color and includes numerous full-page comics, with
translations into English. Get the basics right for the
new, up-and-coming comics country. Published by The Swedish
Comics Association and distributed by Top Shelf.

*******************************************************
RE-OFFERING TWO SWEDISH CLASSICS:
*******************************************************

SECOND THOUGHTS by Niklas Asker
-- An 88-Page Graphic Novel
-- $9.95 (US), ISBN 978-1-60309-037-7
www.topshelfcomix.com/swedish-invasion

Jess is a writer living in London. Andrew is a photographer
on his way to New York. They do not fall in love --
not exactly -- but their brief encounter in Stansted Airport
will impact both of their lives more than they can imagine.
In SECOND THOUGHTS, the clean, emotional ink-work of Swedish
newcomer Niklas Asker guides two characters through modern
city life and love, as they struggle separately yet somehow
together. Past and present, reality and fiction overlap in
this sweet, haunting, and ultimately inspiring graphic novel.

*******************************************************

FROM THE SHADOW OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS (VOL 1)
Edited by Johannes Klenell
-- A 200-Page Anthology
-- $19.95 (US), ISBN 978-1-60309-011-7
www.topshelfcomix.com/swedish-invasion

Originally inspired by the counterculture work of Robert Crumb,
the comical aspect of MAD and the storytelling of the master
director Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish magazine Galago began
as a publication of political satire during the late 70s.
In the three decades since, it has grown to become the
flagship of the Swedish alternative comics scene.
The anthology, FROM THE SHADOW OF THE NORTHERN LIGHTS,
gathers some of the finest comic artists that Galago and
Sweden have to offer, including contributions from
David Liljemark, Marcus Ivarsson, Mats Jonsson, Knut Larsson,
Kolbeinn Karlsson, Liv Strömquist, & Loka Kanarp.

[Super Hero News] Retailers Rave About Marvel Retailer Resource Center

Retailers Rave About Marvel Retailer Resource Center

Since its launch in June 2009, the MARVEL RETAILER RESOURCE CENTER (
www.marvelretailers.com <http://www.marvelretailers.com/> ) has provided
retailers without a presence on the web with low-cost and easy to
maintain websites, and for retailers with existing websites an easily
updated Marvel branded store for their sites. And now these websites
have been recently redesigned to maximize the benefits for both the
retailers and their customers. As the site continues to grow, with new
ways to communicate directly with Marvel on their way, retailers
continue to rave about Marvel's groundbreaking service which includes
web sites, First Looks at comics before they arrive in stores, marketing
materials, updated ordering information and more!

This year the MRRC continues to expand as a free section is now
available to all retailers, message boards linking Marvel and other
retailers, as well as an overall redesign of the MRRC itself making it
much more user friendly and dynamic. To the see the retailers already
taking advantage of the MRRC, click here for a list of websites that
have been created with the MRRC:
http://marvel.com/news/comicstories.10990

"This is an awesome program and a no brainer to be part of if you're a
retailer who sells Marvel Comics."-Mike Malve, Atomic Comics (
www.atomiccomics.com <http://www.atomiccomics.com/> )

"We've used the MRRC for comic previews and marketing materials from its
very start. The comic previews alone have been worth the monthly fee,
and we even receive free product to help offset that! Stores with no
web presence can get a jumpstart with the MRRC, too."-Chris Powell,
LoneStar Comics (www.mycomicshop.com <http://www.mycomicshop.com/> ,
http://lonestarcomics.marvelretailers.com
<http://lonestarcomics.marvelretailers.com/> )

"The MRRC gives us all the tools we need to effectively market Marvel
comics and trade paperbacks. It not only helps us directly as retailers
by providing up to date information on upcoming items and previews that
allow us to better market those items but it also provides much of that
same information directly to our customers which generates excitement
and interest among fans. Customers who shop with us once return again
and again and this gives them one more reason to choose us. The MRRC
gives our thousands of Marvel Comics readers what they're looking for
with a direct connection to our store where they can get it
instantly."-Dan Wallace, Impulse Creations (www.impulsecreations.com
<http://www.impulsecreations.com/> ,
http://comicbooks_actionfigures.marvelretailers.com
<http://comicbooks_actionfigures.marvelretailers.com/> )

"As for the initiatives behind the MRRC, it's very encouraging, as a
relatively new retailer exclusive to the online space, to see efforts
like this being undertaken. Given my past career experiences in
marketing for music and media, it's also very refreshing to see the
folks at Marvel being pro-active and embracing new technology and
distribution methods and avoiding some of the pitfalls that some of the
major record labels made. I think their marketing team is really on the
right track. Also, kudos to your team for putting together a nice web
app to help make life easier for retailers."-Steve M, ExpertComics.Com (
www.expertcomics.com <http://www.expertcomics.com/> )

[Super Hero News] ARCANA PR: Arcana Announces Killing Machine

Arcana Announces Killing Machine

VANCOUVER (January 26, 2010) - Arcana Studios, an award winning comic book
publisher and transmedia producer, is proud to announce the upcoming
graphic novel, KILLING MACHINE, by screenwriter Scott Milam that is
currently in production.

Killing Machine tells the tale of Franklyn J Hurt, an undercover agent for
the Global Crime Task Force sent to infiltrate the criminal organization
only known as The Syndicate Six. When his cover is blown, his wife taken
and daughter murdered before his eyes, Frank wakes up barely a man, a torso
with an unrecognizable face, hanging in a warehouse and used as an example
for those who betray The Synidicate Six. However, Frank is rescued by
Special Forces and taken to a secret installation where in its depths a
massive facility of alien technology awaits. There Frank is given the
bionic treatment. After rejecting his new duties, Frank seizes an
opportunity to escape and go rogue to find his missing wife and seek
revenge for the murder of his daughter using a new body that gives him the
means to track down and destroy the killers.

Creator Scott Milam is the screenwriter of the upcoming MOTHER'S DAY,
directed by SAW 2-4 and REPO THE GENETIC OPERA'S Darren Lynn Bousman and
starring Jamie King and Rebecca De Mornay. In addition, Milam is currently
adapting Dark Horse's THE SECRET for Universal and THE WOLFMAN producer,
Scott Stuber. Milam originally brought the idea to producer Daniel Alter,
who produced 20th Century Fox's HITMAN and is currently developing the
sequel, as well as a JOHNNY QUEST movie at Warner Bros, KANE AND LYNCH at
Lions Gate with Bruce Willis attached, and the film adaptation of Devil
Due's popular comic book series HACK/SLASH at Rogue. Milam was originally
going to spec the project as a screenplay until Alter had the idea to bring
the project to Arcana to "reverse-engineer" it into a comic book property
before shopping it as a feature film and video-game project.

Arcana Owner and CEO, Sean O'Reilly said, "Working with Scott has been
incredible and it's simply fascinating to see what his mind comes up
with..." Killing Machine is Milam's first foray into comics. The book is
planned as a series of graphic novels illustrated by newcomer Kenneth Loh.

About Arcana Studios:
Arcana Comics has published over 150 original comics and books and is a
division of Arcana, an award winning transmedia company founded by CEO Sean
O'Reilly. Arcana establishes new brands and intellectual properties with
engaging storytelling and compelling visuals through comic books, graphic
novels, animation, short-form live-action, video games, toys and now,
feature length films. Arcana has created original brands they control such
as The Clockwork Girl and Kade, and have further developed existing brands
for Disney, Sony, Capcom, HBO and more. Recently the studio produced the
animated series RED LOTUS for Spike TV as well as a series of shorts for
Sony Animation. In addition, several of Arcana' s other properties are in
development or pre-production such as GEARHEAD with Valhalla Motion
Pictures.

[Super Hero News] MARVEL: THE HEROIC AGE-- Marvel Begins Exciting New Direction in May 2010

MARVEL: THE HEROIC AGE

Marvel Begins Exciting New Direction in May 2010

New York, NY (January 27, 2010) - Marvel Comics is proud to announce The
Heroic Age, the dawn of an exciting new era of heroism in the Marvel
Universe! Beginning in May 2010 with the release of Avengers #1, The
Heroic Age ushers in a brighter Marvel Universe and a bold new era for
the world's greatest super heroes as they emerge from darkness with a
renewed sense of hope and optimism, leading to the formation of all new
teams with new members...and brand new characters! Titles branded with
the Heroic Age banner offer a perfect jumping on point for readers new
and old alike, as the top comic book creators in the world deliver a
Marvel Universe like you've never seen before!

Over the past few years, the Marvel Universe and its citizens have found
themselves living in a dark age of despair. Beginning with the
disbanding of the Avengers, the heroes of the Marvel Universe have been
caught in a demoralizing downward spiral that has included the genocide
of the mutant population, a divisive civil war between heroes, the
assassination of Captain America, a worldwide subversive alien
infiltration and invasion, and the media-fueled and publicly-supported
ascension of the Green Goblin's civilian identity, Norman Osborn, to
power and control of the United States. Now, the heroes have united once
again, stronger than ever and are prepared to face the dangers that lie
ahead.

"Our heroes have experienced some of their greatest trials and
tribulations recently, but now there's going to be a renewed hope among
their ranks," said Joe Quesada, Chief Creative Officer & Editor-in-Chief
Marvel Entertainment LLC. "As our heroes emerge from the darkness, the
Marvel Universe is going to be a more optimistic place than we've seen
in a quite awhile. But that doesn't mean we're making things easy for
our characters!"

From the tone of the storylines, to the stunning new artistic look, The
Heroic Age ushers in a dramatic new vision of the Marvel Universe.
Marvel's most elite characters will be at the center of The Heroic Age,
including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Fantastic Four, the
Avengers and more!

David Gabriel, Senior Vice-President of Sales & Circulation, Marvel
Entertainment LLC. added "We've been working out the details of The
Heroic Age for about a year now. The plan is to give old and new fans
alike the perfect place to jump into the Marvel Universe without feeling
like they've missed out on anything that's come before. If there's a
Heroic Age banner on one of the books, we're serious when we say 'the
Marvel Universe Starts Here!"

A new Age of Heroes dawns this May as The Heroic Age begins and changes
the face of comics as you know them! Join Brian Michael Bendis, Ed
Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman, John Romita Jr, and more of the industry's
hottest creators as they bring a bold new era for the world's greatest
super heroes, with a stunning new look for the Marvel Universe!

[Super Hero News] Bleeding Cool: Lying In The Gutters – 26th January 2010

Bleeding Cool Comic Book News and Rumors » Lying In The GuttersBleeding Cool: Lying In The Gutters – 26th January 2010
Lying In The Gutters – 26th January 2010

Posted: 26 Jan 2010 02:43 AM PST
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/01/26/lying-in-the-gutters-26th-january-2010

Last week was the biggest week in terms of traffic in Bleeding Cool's history. And thanks to links all round, it looks like this week has started off in a similar fashion. The new servers seem to be coping nicely now.

Exclusive stories included breaking the news about the Wizard Atlanta and New Jersey conventions, (with a few wise words from Wes), piecing together information about Samuel L Jackson's new comic from Boom! Studios, talking about Marvel's potential moves, getting the jump on DC's upcoming promotion for Brian Wood, talking about Platinum's five million dollar injection and revealing the title for Marvel's HOH had slipped out.

I also spent time complaining about Cully Hamner's PR abscence from the film Red, complained about Spartacus' spurious use of the word 'graphic novel', asked if the world record price for a comic book was going to be beaten, worried about the closure of the ICA and wondered who looked like Steve Ditko designs.

I did enjoy The Beano outselling Watchmen, and Neil Gaiman teasing people with The Graveyard Book news then showing off his punkness.

I found Jewish paper cutting with comic books fascinating, but a rabbi blaming the Haitian disaster on a comic strip less so.

I ran a Jim Shelley's series on the Apple Tablet and its potential effect on comics from a developer point of view in four parts, one, two, three and four, to be told its already being referred to in university classes.

I exposed infighting in the Zuda world, helped a man sell his Deadpool comics for $500, confirmed that Kevin Smith has finished writing Green Hornet in advance, enjoyed DC's blog talking about First Wave comics, JSA in Smallville, Outsiders, found an alternative to Marvel's variant for DC Comics offer and pushed Mark Millar's Nemesis charity auction.

I Celebrated comics' coupledoms, looked at Anna Mercury and Gravel, the cover to Deadpool And Cable #25, the online comic Gods Head, the comics Dark Avengers, Green Lantern Corps and Joe The Barbarian and Brian Pulido's The Graves,

I ran a not-quite-complete guide to Manhattan comic book dives and laughed at how all the Blackest Night ring logos are causing trouble for DC's production artists.

I ran a quick guide to making easy money with Amazon's discounts, got a first look at Alan Moore's Dodgem Logic #2, saw how Odin's wig gave Sir Anthony Hopkins an identity crisis, and reported on the passing of Jacques Martin.

Si Spurrier and Adi Tantimedh provided entertaining columns too.

You can see how this has been a popular week…
