[Super Hero News] PR - Phantom Captain Action Sweepstakes on ComiXology

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
**

*Contact: Ed Catto*

*201.314.4558*

*or *

*EdCatto@hotmail.com* <EdCatto@hotmail.com>**

*ComiXology and Captain Action's Action Packed Sweepstakes*

*Vintage Collectibles and Merchandise offered to celebrate team-up*

*New York, NY April 7, 2010:* Captain Action Enterprises, LLC, ComiXology
and Moonstone Books are proud to announce the "Action Packed Sweepstakes"
celebrating the release of Phantom/Captain Action #1 with opportunities to
win rare collectibles and signed comics. Fans have a chance to win
collectible classics including vintage Captain Action-Phantom Action toys, a
Sideshow Captain Action statue, Graphitti T-shirts and autographed copies of
issue #1.

Fans can enter the sweepstakes at www.comixology.com/captain_action/

Phantom/Captain Action #1, the first comic book starring heroes of the same
name, written by Mike Bullock with art by Reno Marquis, hits shelves in
April 2010. In this all-new adventure, a covert counter intelligence cartel,
known as the Tatsu, capture Phantom. Diana Palmer-Walker, wife of the
Phantom, must turn to Captain Action for help. "We discover the young
Captain Action has had a crush on Diana since his teenage years, so that
makes for an interesting dynamic," said writer Mike Bullock.

The two-issue mini-series offers a variety of covers by artists Art Thibert,
Mark Sparacio and Michael T. Gilbert, including a special "C2E2 Concussive
Convention Exclusive" edition available at the C2E2 comic convention in
Chicago.

This story continues the long history the two heroes share. The Phantom and
Captain Action originally teamed up over four decades ago as part of the
1960s Ideal Captain Action toy line. As the original super hero action
figure, this well-loved line provided a litany of well-known costumes for
kids to create their own Captain Action adventures. Young fans could
essentially transform their Captain Action figure into popular vigilantes
such Batman, Spider-Man and The Phantom. Captain Action partnered with The
Phantom again in the 1990's reprise by Playing Mantis and most recently with
the Cast-A-Way 8" Mego Sized Captain Action Figures.

"When Ed Catto brought the idea to me, I was boggled that no one had ever
done it before," said series writer and long time Phantom scribe Mike
Bullock. "These two characters have been intertwined since the '60s, so
bringing their first comic book story to life has been a joy and an honor."

As word of this pairing has leaked out, fans are abuzz. "This adventure has
essentially been in the making by fans for over forty years. We're glad we
could make it 'real' by publishing it, at last!" said Moonstone Publisher
Joe Gentile.

ComiXology's John Roberts said, "We're excited to partner again with Captain
Action and to bring this cool promotion to our ComiXology readers. Bringing
Phantom and Captain Action together again side-by-side in this new series
promises to be a real treat for all fans."

[Super Hero News] Bleeding Cool: Lying In The Gutters - April 5th 2010

Bleeding Cool: Lying In The Gutters - April 5th 2010
Lying In The Gutters - April 5th 2010
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2010/04/05/lying-in-the-gutters-april-5th-2010/
Posted: 05 Apr 2010 04:48 PM PDT

I always hated The Big Bang Theory because it wasn't Spaced. Strangely I'm started to be drawn towards it again. Okay so what's been going on this week?

Top Ten Bleeds Of The Week
1. Star Wars Patent Plastic Potato - And Many More Things
Star Wars patents unearthed from the files for all sorts of Star Wars toys. Even if one looked a little more like Darth Tater. And of course, if one day someone does make a real life AT-AT, the estate of George Lucas will be there with his paperwork.

2. A Kiss Is Still A Kiss - Wolverine's Son And Bullseye Get It On
Nothing like a bit of mutant-on-assassin action to get the hits rising. And yes, it's all to do with Daken's pheromones, but come on. This scene is pure slashfic.

3. Malware Concerns At Newsarama Addressed
Everyone's browsers scream "malware" when they try to get on to Newsarama. So they searched for "newsarama malware". And they came to Bleeding Cool for the explanation. Because they couldn't see the explanation at Newsarama. The irony is not lost on anyone.

4. Brightest Day In Pictures
Well didn't it all just look spiffing? Everybody lives! Except, you know, for those who don't.

5. Marvel's Next Big Thing - Shadowland
Just what is Daredevil up to? What is he building? And how many titles will this new event, a year in the making, take over? Place your bets now.

6. Top Ten Tips To Blag Your Way Into San Diego
Okay, okay, Columbine joke aside, I know a number of people who have set a few of these in motion to get into San Diego now that tickets are sold out. Got any more to add?

7. Number Crunching: Blackest Night #8
Taking the most popular comic of the week apart, panel by panel, cent by cent. And discovering it's rather good value for money too. If only more $3.99 comics were like this.

8. Avatar Press To Sue James Cameron
Yes it was an April Fool. And yes, it got sillier as it went on. And yes none of you should have fallen for it. And yes, some of you did. Serving legal papers in 3D lenticular Really?

9. Marvel Sends Letter To Creators About Apple iPad Urging They Stay Positive
A bit of spin here from Marvel's PR guys, trying to keep their creators onside as hacks scour the web trying to find dissent regarding this Bright! Bold! Future! So naturally I got a copy of the letter.

10. Fox Denies Mark Millar Was Offered X-Men 4
Days after Mark Millar mock-announced that he'd bought a billboard in Times Square to advertise Nemesis, he announced he'd turned down the chance to write X-Men 4. No wonder some people were a little unsure. Challenges were made, I got in touch with Fox, then they denied it. remarkably, since then I've seen evidence that Fox offered Mark a little more than they were letting on to me - but not X-Men 4.

Bubbling Under
Is Mark Millar The Boy Who Cried Wolverine?, Jim Lee drawing on the iPad, DC's upcoming War Of The Marvels, the confirming of the Marvel iPad App, trouble at the Hyatt, more porn photos from the Batman XXX shoot, a look inside the TARDIS - oh lots of Doctor stuff actually, an initial review and then ten things that occurred the morning after, a few looks at Wondercon, and some disgareement over who was actually publishing Prince Of Persia - and how. And that Daily Mail review of Kick Ass.

Five You May Have Missed
1. Britain's Child Image Legislation Coming Into Effect

2. European Digital Creator Issues and the possibility of a creators strike.

3. Checker announcing their withdrawal from Diamond - and alleging all sorts of bizarre behaviour.

4. The French Connection store redesign for Kick Ass. Handy when the owner has made an investment in the film!

5. Rejected By Zuda - Tears Of A Dragon.

[Super Hero News] RESEND WITH IMAGE - LONGTIME ARCHIE COMICS ARTIST HENRY SCARPELLI DIES AT 79

LONGTIME ARCHIE COMICS ARTIST HENRY SCARPELLI DIES AT 79

It is with deep regret and sorrow that Archie Comics acknowledges the loss of longtime artist, Henry Scarpelli, of Grasmere, Staten Island who passed away on Sunday, April 4 after a long illness. He was 79.

"Henry was an invaluable part of the Archie Comics family," said Archie Comics Co-President and Editor-in-Chief, Victor Gorelick. "He will truly be missed."

Scarpelli studied at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan where he honed his pencil and inking skills. He would go on to pencil and/or ink several comic strips and comic book features over the years and even wrote a few as well.

Scarpelli's first professional comic book work was a back-up feature for one of DC's funny animal titles of the late 1940s. In the 1950s, he joined a newspaper syndicate as assistant artist on the "Little Sport" strip and soon had a cartoon panel of his own, "TV Tee Hees." This single panel gag strip built around the inner workings of TV broadcasting proved so popular that it ran in 150 newspapers from 1956 to1975.

"The TV Tee Hees" strip led to TV comic books when Scarpelli ended up at Dell working on several comic books based on 1960s TV shows. Scarpelli was adept at capturing the features of the popular TV stars of the day, and among the programs he adapted to comics were "The Beverly Hillbillies," "Bewitched," "Get Smart," "Hogan's Heroes" and "McHale's Navy."

Scarpelli's Dell work led to assignments from several publishers including Marvel, DC, Charlton and Archie. While he inked and occasionally penciled both superhero and romance comics, the majority of Scarpelli's output consisted of depicting humorous characters. He continued to work on comic books based on real life personalities like Jerry Lewis and Abbott & Costello. Henry also had opportunities to work on some of the ground-breaking DC humor titles like "Angel & the Ape" and "Stanley & His Monster."

Ultimately, Scarpelli found himself getting more and more work in the genre that would define his career, teenage humor comics. Scarpelli's most notable contributions in this area included "Millie the Model" for Marvel; "Date with Debbi," "Leave it to Binky," "Swing with Scooter" for DC Comics; and Charlton's "Sinistro, Boy Fiend" - a humorous teenage super-villain.

All of these titles were stepping stones for what would become Henry's crowning achievement, to become one of Archie Comics' lead artists. Henry penciled and inked for most of the Archie Comics titles. Among Scarpelli's more notable accomplishments for Archie, and one he was very proud of, was drawing the daily and Sunday Archie newspaper strip for over fifteen years.

Those who knew Henry Scarpelli personally, will no doubt remember his good humor and how much he loved to laugh. "It's no wonder his first published work was a strip titled, 'Henry the Laughing Hyena,'" said Paul Castiglia, an Archie Comics historian who wrote a few stories drawn by Scarpelli.

Scarpelli is survived by his wife Claire, son Glenn Scarpelli, sisters Rose, Louise and Maryann; brothers Louis, George and Ralph; and many cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.
